What do Deep-Sea Amphipods and Your Washing Machine Have to Do With Each Other?

Our washing machine is truly the workhouse of our home. How about you? Ours handles everything we throw at it—our grimy clothes, muddy outdoor gear, sweaty gym stuff, dirty towels, not to mention my carpenter husband’s paint-and-mud-and-dust-and-sweat encrusted work clothes.

Unfortunately, it’s also a prime candidate for bacteria, dirt build-up, and musty smells. When we start getting unpleasant whiffs, we know it’s due for a deep clean. But here’s the thing: I don’t like most products that are on the market. The chemicals and fragrances are too harsh and the majority come in plastic packaging.

I don’t know if you heard but last year, scientists discovered a new shrimp-like creature at a depth of 20,000 feet near Guam in the Mariana Trench. Guess what else they discovered? This newly found deep-sea amphipod—now named Eurythenes plasticus—had pieces of polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) in its guts. This is the kind of non-biodegradable plastic resin used to make clothing fibres, food packaging, and bottles for liquids and gels—like the ones used for washing machine cleaners.

Isn’t it sad that we’re now naming animals after the plastic they’ve ingested?

“We’re just making a statement to say that we’re now at the point where we are looking at a new species from an unexplored habitat and it’s already contaminated with plastic,” said Alan Jamieson, the lead author of the paper announcing the discovery and a professor of marine ecology at Newcastle University in the UK.

Do you see where I’m going with this? We just can’t keep using products—like washing machine cleaners—that pollute our oceans with terrible chemicals and non-biodegradable plastics.

That’s where etee’s brand new Washing Machine Cleaner steps in!

This powerful powder is formulated with natural ingredients that will bust up bacteria, prevent odour-causing residue and build-up, and help optimize the cleaning power of your machine. Use only 5 tablespoons of it once a month to keep your machine shipshape! And our packaging is made of paper lined with an omnidegradable plastic that completely decomposes thanks to the help of enzymes and microbes. Thanks, science!

This week, etee is giving you a free pack—that’s 2 cycles worth of powder—when you buy $60 worth of product. It’s the perfect opportunity to try it out!
