  • My biggest struggle with being plastic free during covid has been the lack of items in grocery stores! Usually we are able to shop around for plastic alternatives or environmentally friendly items but with grocery store shelves being cleared, the options for food has been limited. Fresh bakery items have been individually bagged so the choice for bulk buying to reduce waste has actually turned into more waste! Good thing we have a healthy garden and large bags of flour to reduce our plastic any way we can!

  • My issues with remaining plastic-free have to do with safety right now. I’ve been doing some grocery shopping for my senior citizen parents during the pandemic and have noticed some stores going back to plastic bags (which were “banned” in New York) on March 1. Being “green” goes out the window when someone’s health is at stake.

  • The hardest thing is sticking to the waste free lifestyle. At first our shopping bags were useless, then I read the post about taking the buggy to your car and bagging the items there. Next was produce and not using those little baggy the store provides and tossing loose produce into the cart. Add in our wish to support local companies and products. So much waste with take out containers, we started looking at which companies were using cases that were recycled or could become repurposed. The hardest thing was not being able to fill our jars with spices from bulk, but one of the stores locally started filling brown paper bags, labeling them with spice and amount.

I would stay that with being on the road for work, where I tend to use much of the zero waste (eco friendly) products as they are light weight, effective and leakproof, I have neglected much of the liquids I had at home and being home has given me a chance to work through the rest of the supply I had before I fully convert over to a no waste life. Also during the time of covid I’m loving the number of cleaning solutions that have been online. It really displays how resilient humanity can be in times of need. Times are hard but it’s finding ways to adapt to this new way life with old habits remaining enforced that counts. With less product on the shelves potentially this stresses the need for reusable products and healthier lifestyle choices.

  • Hi!

My major hurdle is the fact the grocery stores won’t let you bring in your reusable grocery bags! They want you to use their plastic bags. I ALWAYS have to tell them that I don’t want their bags and I have bags in my trunk and I will put the groceries in there. Also, when ordering online and picking-up groceries at the store, they DOUBLE-BAG ALOT of things! It almost makes me cry. The double bag my meat, fruits and veggies! Also, they use a separate bag for any cleaning supplies you may order. It’s horrible. I’ve spoken to the people who actually choose the groceries and they say it’s for sanitation reasons. Can’t they use paper bags, I’ve asked? They look at me like a deer in the headlights. At least with the paper bags I can put those in the recycling. I can’t wait for all of this to get back to normal and I can start using my reusable bags again. Anyway, looking forward to trying your chewpaste! I have no doubt it will be great. Thank you! M

  • At the grocery store has been the biggest challenge as reusable bags are not allowed and the store doesn’t offer paper bags. In addition, online grocery shopping means that you often end up with produce with extra plastic packaging.
