  • Grocery shopping, definitely. Even the veggies at the farmers market were plastic wrapped! My CSA share came in plastic bags. Trader Joe’s still does not allow bringing own bags; however they do not use plastic bags, but instead paper bags – still undesirable though.

  • By far the most stressful balance to strike is between wanting to support local restaurants and knowing that they’ll keep packaging our food in plastic containers. We have more Tupperware now than we’ve ever had, and though it’s recyclable, it’s still devastating.

  • Food deliveries. Oh the plastic bags! Frozen vegetables in their plastic bags each bagged again in another plastic bag. Hurts my soul.

  • Prior to the shutdown I often bought rice, etc., in bulk using my own net or plastic bags but, understandably, the bins were emptied, and still are, so I have had to buy items in plastic packages instead. I gave up my car years ago so I shop close to home. However, for 2 months the nearby store wouldn’t allow personal shopping bags and they only offered plastic bags. I occasionally walked home carrying my purchases without a bag but with 3 or more items that’s difficult. I appreciate the need for these measures but it’s difficult to avoid plastic and to set a good example for others under these circumstance.

  • Bulk shopping – I used to buy everything from grains/beans, mushrooms, teas, herbs/spices to various soaps. I totally understand why grocery stores had to take away The bulk bins but I just wonder if it ever will come back. I still try to avoid buying things in plastic but if I do, I buy the biggest bag/container to minimize plastic.
