  • Definitely plastic bags… our markets had pretty much phased them out and encouraged everyone to bring their own bags… which meant that when the lockdowns struck, they had very low stock of any type of bag at all. Once they blew through that (because they weren’t allowing anyone to bring bags anymore) they were forced to start using plastic bags because the paper ones were backordered severely. It’s super disappointing, and I’ve been trying to get them to just put the groceries back in the cart and I’ll bag them when I get to my trunk, it’s been my only option and not an easy one on rainy days!

  • I’m an essential worker so to limit my exposure to everyone else I’ve been ordering my families groceries online. They won’t allow you to use your own bags and they put all my fruit and veggies in plastic bags as well. I do keep them and try to reuse but I’m getting quite the pile now. I’ve taken them to my local corner store and have given them to bags to reuse for their customers. Every little bit helps.

  • The biggest challenge I’ve found staying plastic free during the virus has been ordering groceries to be delivered to my house. For some reason the people doing our shopping will sometimes put 2 kiwis or 1 avocado for example, into one large plastic bag. I even had them put my bananas into a plastic bag once which I find insane. When I shop myself, I don’t even bother putting my produce into those plastic bags, I just throw them all into my cart & then into my reusable bags I bring with me.
