  • So far my biggest challenge has been all the take out food. There are a few places that have had take out in paper boxes though and I have been trying to frequent those!

  • My biggest challenge has been having to shop at grocery stores and other big-box retailers who typically use a lot of packaging, instead of being able to buy bulk goods from whole food stores, or buy from local farmers’ markets. A lot of my favourite small businesses closed during the pandemic, while the larger shops seemed to stay open.

Having to switch back to buying all of my food in non-reusable packaging has been frustrating. And so has being unable to use reusable bags in stores, or reusable to-go cups and takeaway containers (I typically bring my own glass or stainless steel containers to restaurants where I get takeout).

I’ve been ordering more takeout than usual, hoping to keep my favourite local restaurants running through the pandemic, and that only increases the amount of plastic I’m consuming. Fortunately some of my favourite places use paper boxes, but it’s still meant an increase in plastic from other restaurants.

  • Well, for me it’s not been very difficult in fact I’ve found brands like ETEE and others to help me transition to being almost completely plastic free. However, the impact that this will soon lead to is frightening. Disposable everything will take a toll on our environment from gloves, masks, gowns, and restaurant materials like menus.
So that pretty much means I have to work so much harder to live plastic free to compensate for our disposable culture.

  • My family has been trying to support our local restaurants as often as we can….which means more plastic to go containers than usual.

  • The significant reduction in items I can get from bulk bins has a big impact on the amount of plastic coming in to my kitchen.
